We represent a collection of heterogeneous groups that differ in culture, diet, language, ancestry, and religion. The diaspora across the United States is as diverse as the reasons that led us and our ancestors to migrate to this country.
Asian Americans are often viewed as a “model minority” that is successful and hard working. This myth ignores the diversity within our communities and renders us invisible.
The little data we have are often aggregated into a general “AANHPI” category, and masks the diversity of our communities and the disparities in health outcomes.
Overcoming barriers to breast/chestfeeding that exist in the AANHPI community
Which AANHPI subgroups are in your community? What does the breast/chestfeeding data look like for these groups? Look beyond myths about AANHPIs.
Ask questions and listen to their voices. What are the community’s priorities? Do not make assumptions.
There is much systemic racism and implicit bias in healthcare. Many staff continue to perpetuate myths such as "AANHPI women do not breastfeed". Or they may assume that breastfeeding rates among the AANHPIs they serve are high without delving into the data.
Support and build up AANHPI lactation professionals so they may offer culturally congruent care to their own community members.
